Jesus Throughout Scripture: {Exodus 12:3)

Sacrifices and Temples

Have you ever wondered why before there was a temple there was an offering to God?

I haven’t either, but it struck me as I was preparing to write today’s post.

We saw the patriarchs build altars and make sacrifices,  but the temple was built by the Israelites and Moses

after their first sacrifice was made.

It is because everything that God had them make was a picture of what is already established in the heavenlies.

That is something to shout about.  Something that makes one preach themselves happy.

Because before there was ever a sacrifice on earth the lamb of God was awaiting in heaven

to come to earth to be sacrificed for our sins.

A Lamb

Today we are not going to focus on the temple as you can tell.

Although all of the parts of the temple represent Jesus our Lord and Savior.

We are going to focus on the Passover lamb.

Our reading from scripture is taken from Exodus 12.  Take the time to read the chapter if you can.

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of the month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.  Exodus 12:3 NIV

Moses told the Israelites God commanded them to take a lamb for each household.

To slay the lamb and then put the blood on the door posts and the tops of the doors

to show as a sign that the death angel should  pass over their houses

when the plague came through Egypt that night to take the firstborn of every family.

The Israelites did as they were commanded and when the firstborn of every household

including that of Pharoah died, Pharoah let the Israelites go.

Then the Israelites were free to leave the slavery of Egypt.

They were delivered, just as we are by the blood of the sacrifice of the lamb.

The Lamb of God

John called Jesus the Lamb of God.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,  “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29 NIV

We are delivered by our sacrificial lamb is Jesus. A perfect sacrifice once and for all!!!

So this is a picture of Jesus, who was to come. Who is still to come again. Praise God.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[a]

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire,

nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.

Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.

10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and

again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,

13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.

14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Hebrews 10:5-14 NIV

So let’s recap our lessons:

In Genesis Jesus is The Seed of the woman

In Exodus Jesus is Our Passover Lamb
