Greater Expectations

Today I got to do my favorite thing at the Pregnancy Support Center.  I got to make two layettes.  I was sick last week and so one of my clients called and left a message saying she had the baby. She was expecting a boy and ‘wallah’ he showed up.  Another client was scheduled to come pick up her layette for a little bundle of girl.    Her mother called to tell me she was in labor.  When her mother came to pick up the things for her and the baby she said they were starting her epidural.  How wonderful to be expecting a grand baby or your first child today. Bundles of blessed expectations.

For the next so many weeks I want to address the subject of expectation.  I thought greater expectations was only fitting because of the great One we have our expectation in.  Our great hope is in Jesus, and our God is greater than who we expect Him to be.

What are you expecting?  Who do you place your expectation in?  Where do you go when your expectations have not been met?  What can we expect while we are expecting?

All of these questions are ones we need to consider in no particular order, or should we?  Let’s say that the first question we need to ask ourselves is who do I place my expectation in.

Whom we place our expectations in is critical.  Jesus said, “Without Me you can do nothing.”  So placing our expectations in ourselves is not wise.  God also tells us not to be wise in our own eyes.  Leaning on our own understanding is a lack of trust in the One who knows all.  Proverbs 3:5 tells us to acknowledge Him and He will make our paths straight.

Psalm 118:8 says that it is better to trust in the Lord than to put any confidence in man.  So placing our expectation in others is not wise either.

Our expectation is supposed to be in God alone.  So for the rest of this series of devotionals let us memorize this passage:
