30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

So just from this passage we can gather an understanding of how one grieves the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit is a person. Not an it! He can be grieved. From the scripture above we see by:
Bitterness – a deep-rooted anger, resentment, bad tasting.
Wrath – strong anger with a desire for revenge.
Anger – hostility that works evil (It is okay to be angry, but do not sin while angry. Also, do not hold onto anger.)
Clamour – loud, persistent outrage.
Evil speaking – harsh language, language used to speak evil over someone, cursing.
Malice – intent to do harm to someone.
Further Understanging of This Passage of Scripture:
30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God’s own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).
31Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).
32And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tender-hearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.

Other Ways We Grieve the Holy Spirit:
We can grieve the Holy Spirit is through disobedience. If we are instructed to do something, and do not do it then we have fallen into disobeying God.
What if the disciples had not listened to Jesus in Acts Chapter 1? What if they left Jerusalem? They would not have received the Holy Spirit.
Another way we can grieve Him is to fall into unbelief. If the disciples did not believe that Jesus was going to do what He said they would have left Jerusalem instead of waiting. If they did not believe they had to wait to be empowered they would have gone ahead without Him. Unbelief in this case would have resulted in a lack of empowerment to do what God willed them to do.
We also can fall into unbelief and disobedience. Thankfully we can pray for the ability to overcome unbelief and repent from disobedience.
Envy is jealousy, and the bible says where it is there is strife and every evil work. This also grieves the Holy Spirit. James 3:16
We can ask forgiveness for grieving the Holy Spirit and ask Christ to renew a right Spirit within us. A good Psalm to pray is Psalm 51. When we confess our sin God forgives our sin, Beloved. Believe in His restoration of the anointing within you and the empowerment to do what He has called you to do today!
