Journey in Power

1 And he called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.
Luke 9:1-3 (ASV)

I find it quite interesting that when Jesus was sending the apostles on a journey to preach the kingdom of God He told them to take nothing with them. Let’s take a look at what He specifically said not to take.

No staff, no wallet, no bread, no money, or extra clothing. They were to rely strictly upon the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

How often do we believe enough to do that?  Every Christian is called to go and preach the gospel to all creation in Mark 16:15.

What was a staff to the apostles?
It meant comfort and identity as a shepherd.
What was a wallet for?
For holding money and possibly identification, a bag to carry belongings..
What was bread to them?
  Nourishment necessary for life.
Why no money and no wallet?
They could still carry it another way.
What were extra clothes for them?
A provision that provided comfort, cleanliness, warmth.

Christ tells us not to worry about anything.  That God provides all our needs according to his riches.  Not our own.  When Jesus told them to go He meant for them to completely trust Him.  As they obeyed, and did His will they were exhilarated by the provision of God.  They were amazed by the power of God given unto them and returned to tell Him all about their journeys.

We know their journey was not easy because of Christ’s words to them in Matthew 10:5-25.

Where are you in your journey?  Are you trusting the power of God in you?  The journey is not promised to be easy.  Are you trusting His provision will be there along the way?  Is your focus on Jesus or the economy of late?  What are you worrying about today?

Meditations this week are Philippians 4:6,19, Luke 9:1-13,Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 1:18, 2 Timothy 1:7

Let go and Let God,
